a) Popular Magazine- Cosmopolitan
Citation-"Hot Sheet: 6 Trends on the Rise Right Now." Cosmopolitan 2009: 39. ProQuest Research Library. Web. 23 July 2012 .
This was a very small article from Cosmopalitan that gives you a quick glance at what is happening in the world at a glance. I wanted to refer to just this part of the article.
“Houston public schools have banned sexting, some NFL teams are forbidding players from typing in locker rooms, and several states are cracking down on sending texts while driving. For those who can't control their thumbs, the new reSTART Internet Addiction Recovery Program helps textaholics "reconnect to the real world." “
I think it is interesting that they are starting to include internet addiction in with texting, personally when I think of texting I don’t think of internet. I picked this article to show an example of a “trashy, or rather fluff” magazine reporting somewhat interesting news.
b) Scholarly Journal- Proquest
Citation- Lin, Chien-Hsin, Shong-Lin Lin, and Chin-Pi Wu. "The Effects of Parental Monitoring and Leisure Boredom on Adolescents' Internet Addiction." Adolescence 44.176 (2009): 993-1004. ProQuest Family Health; ProQuest Research Library. Web. 23 July 2012.
Is this a credible source-
It was published in 2009, a little old but fairly recent.
It came out of a trusted database.
Credible authours.

I selected this article because I found it interesting that both of the scholarly journals I read the first one I could not get a citation for, said that there were strong ties between Internet Addiction and family life. Also the scholarly journals I found most were Asian countries.
c) Newspaper Article- San Francisco Chronicle
Citation-Haddock, Vicki. "HOOKED ON THE WEB / while Internet Addiction is Not Yet Recognized by Psychiatrists, Cyberspace Compulsives Obviously Need a Large Dose of Reality." San Francisco Chronicle: C.1. Western Newsstand. Dec 10 2006. Web. 23 July 2012 .
I picked this article because from what I read in the scholarly journals this is a real problem especially in Asia. According to this news article it has yet to be established as a condition. This article is a little bit dated but it brought up so good points on other addictions we accept like gambling.
d) Summary-
I really enjoyed this section of the course it allows you to use a “source” that in the past may have been overlooked in the past because to find newspaper articles and periodicals would have been considered time consuming. I enjoy reading magazines because they are gaged at a 6 grade level on average, not to say that I am not reading past a 6th grade level but it dumbs the research down to where you get it quickly, you can weed out the things that you don’t care about and research further on the stuff that interests you. I find that very helpful especially if it is a long paper. Also the sources in magazines and newspapers can be viewed as fairly credible, as long as it is a credible publication
Hi, Erica:
ReplyDeleteIt seems you were able to find interesting articles on your topic without any difficulty and explore the database as well. It's true that magazines have a different audience then a scholarly research article and that can be how nonexperts can gain understanding of emerging research. As I mentioned in the email I sent, your annotation for the scholarly articles needs to tell me the clues you used to determine it was a research article. You mentioned credibility, what do you look for to determine that?
Thank you for your efforts,
Andrea
Hi, Erica:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. I can give you full credit for the assignment now.
Cheers,
