Part 10, Creating a website

 Summary

This was a good assignment to help me understand the bare essentials of the HTML coding, I will probably never be a coder at anytime in my life but it was fun pushing my computer skills, to the next level.  I have enjoyed learning more skills on the databases and I think it will help me in my continued education. Understanding how to research and what is credible out there is very important this day and age because we are getting more information thrown at us then any generation that came before us.

1^st Source: Distand, M. (2011). The Future of Print: The Book. Feliciter, 57(5) 182-184

I went to the library website and went into Ebsco and search the full title and the text pulled up. It took me all of 30 seconds with my newly discovered knowledge of databases.

A: He is a Director of Libraries in Alberta; I would say he is pretty knowledgeable on the printed word.

S: This is a periodical that is put out by the library association in Canada.

P: News of the library association, its main purpose is to inform.

E: I think he was very even on presenting the facts.

C: It hit all the high points, with enough extra interesting fun facts to keep me reading.

T: The article was publish in October (2011) so it is fairly current.

2^nd Source: Morrison, E (2011, August 22). Are books dead, and can authors survive? The Guardian

I went onto google searched the title in its entirety,  and it was the first thing that popped up, I verified that is was the right guy and it was.

A: He is an award winning author, and he has published 3 novels.

S: The Guardian is a daily newspaper in Britain

P: The article was written to inform the public about the potential crisis writer’s face

E: I thought that he was not very even he presented the article in a way that was slanted in writers favor.

Summary-

I really enjoyed the first article The future of Print: The book.  I thought that it was a very well written piece that seemed to go straight down the middle for the most part. I liked that it wasn’t dry and it kept you wanting to read. I liked how he presented his facts. I particularly liked the part

 “After Amazon unwittingly sold early Kindle owners a title for which it lack legal rights, its purchasers discovered it deleted by remote control. Ironically, the confiscated e-book was Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.”

I also liked how he made the argument that the books and e-books can co-exist.  He mentioned in the article that “E-books will undoubtedly dominate the market for large reference books, such as encyclopedias, and anything else that is regularly revised and updated, as well as for scholarly journals, if not also popular magazines.”  I like the idea that the two can both be utilized. I hate the thought of telling my kids back in my day, when we had books.

I did not care for the second article, and after doing research, knowing he is an author his dislike of what the publishing companies it makes a lot of sense. The thing is that of course the jobs that were of yesterday have faded out, there are a lot of the factory jobs and other jobs that have been retired due to the advancements in technology. Maybe there won’t be highly paid writers in the future, but history shows us that there are not many in the past either. Also even if the printed work is not being done as much doesn’t mean there will be a decline in reading, I think if anything people will read more.

It is written by a doctor, it is a fairly recent article regarding, symptoms and different types of internet addictions, also this site has been up since 2005, so I feel like they have some knowledge with internet addiction.

Why is this credible?

It is published on the Stanford school of medicines website, they are known to be pretty reputable. It is written by a medical doctor, the only problem with it, is it is a little out of date.

Summary:

 If you search diligently on the open web you can find good credible sources for your research the trick is to use your skills of reason, we probably have used A.S.P.E.C.T or something to that effect without knowing it because we use reasoning we have learned over the course of our lives to help decipher the credibility or a source.  I use this when I am doing research and have been using it for a number of years, this class however has helped me fine tune these skills. I found it relatively easy to locate the type of sites I wanted to use in my research

They are known for a system search, to help businesses be more efficient.

“Instead of matching the occurrence of words or symbols (as done in indexing systems), semantic search systems match concepts and their meaningful variations.

Employees can search for answers in internal documents.

They can search web, news, blogs and social media sources.

They break off into smaller search engines like PubMed search for medical documents. With this search engine you fo not need to use boolean charicters because no matter what form of the word you use it should not effect the search results. The benifit to this search engine is it takes the work out of searching, it can compinsate for words that are used, for example you can ask it a question like "how fast is swine flu spreading." and it can disect the sentance and seach for the answer.

Uses:

large businesses with a lot of internal documents, also depending on the industry this would be a great search engine to get proficient at.

This was a very small article from Cosmopalitan that gives you a quick glance at what is happening in the world at a glance. I wanted to refer to just this part of the article.

 “Houston public schools have banned sexting, some NFL teams are forbidding players from typing in locker rooms, and several states are cracking down on sending texts while driving. For those who can't control their thumbs, the new reSTART Internet Addiction Recovery Program helps textaholics "reconnect to the real world." “

I think it is interesting that they are starting to include internet addiction in with texting, personally when I think of texting I don’t think of internet. I picked this article to show an example of a “trashy, or rather fluff” magazine reporting somewhat interesting news.

It was published in 2009, a little old but fairly recent.
It came out of a trusted database.
Credible authours.

I selected this article because I found it interesting that both of the scholarly journals I read the first one I could not get a citation for, said that there were strong ties between Internet Addiction and family life. Also the scholarly journals I found most were Asian countries.

I picked this article because from what I read in the scholarly journals this is a real problem especially in Asia. According to this news article it has yet to be established as a condition. This article is a little bit dated but it brought up so good points on other addictions we accept like gambling.

d)   Summary-

I really enjoyed this section of the course it allows you to use a “source” that in the past may have been overlooked in the past because to find newspaper articles and periodicals would have been considered time consuming. I enjoy reading magazines because they are gaged at a 6 grade level on average, not to say that I am not reading past a 6th grade level but it dumbs the research down to where you get it quickly, you can weed out the  things that you don’t care about and research further on the stuff that interests you.  I find that very helpful especially if it is a long paper. Also the sources in magazines and newspapers can be viewed as fairly credible, as long as it is a credible publication

For the purpose of this assignment I didn’t find this source helpful. If I was looking for a manual to tell me how to get a new software installed, or if I wanted a word book to teach me Microsoft word this one may be more helpful . Overall I found its setup not very user friendly I liked the Cornell and the Clark catalogs because they were so user friendly they were easy to navigate. I couldn’t pull up any books or articles on my topic, I double checked I was in the right place but I still was unable to find a source.

What Clues in the book record lead you to believe that this book is credible, or trustworthy?

The fact that she has written other books and I found them in more than one database, both scholarly databases chances are she is a well known expert on the topic also Google lets me preview the book that is nice, because they allow me to view up to 50 pages of the book you can use reasoning and wisdom to decide to a book is credible. This book is a little dated though I would prefer a more updated book. Especially with this topic, the internet is ever changing and since Internet Addiction is a new disease they have learned more on the topic in the last 14 years.

Summary

I have been in specialized classes for so long I haven’t really had to research for a class in a long time, so I am a little out of the loop as far as places to search for credible information when researching. I have used the college databases in the past when I needed it for English and other college classes. I have never seen the e-books one, and I was not surprised that Google had a book section. I love Google it is easy to navigate and easy to use, I liked the fact that it let you narrow your search to books, magazines, and search during time period that makes it nice. Also you don’t need to be registered at a college to use the Google books, and if you were doing some independent learning that would be nice! I like the college databases though because they allow you to view the entire text on some of them that is handy when you want a book and you can’t get to a library, and that is where Google books fall short.
