Research Journal, Part 8: types of Information:Focus on Search Engines and Web Sites

Search Tools:

Hakia
They are known for a system search, to help businesses be more efficient.
“Instead of matching the occurrence of words or symbols (as done in indexing systems), semantic search systems match concepts and their meaningful variations.
Employees can search for answers in internal documents.
They can search web, news, blogs and social media sources.
They break off into smaller search engines like PubMed search for medical documents. With this search engine you fo not need to use boolean charicters because no matter what form of the word you use it should not effect the search results. The benifit to this search engine is it takes the work out of searching, it can compinsate for words that are used, for example you can ask it a question like "how fast is swine flu spreading." and it can disect the sentance and seach for the answer.
Uses:
large businesses with a lot of internal documents, also depending on the industry this would be a great search engine to get proficient at.

Metasearch Tool

Brosys-
Allows you to search with multiple engines at once
You can organize your searches into folders
Logs online habits
Still under test phase
Allows you to search pre designed folders based on specific areas of interest
Uses:
This would be most useful for simple searches, like expanding your knowledge on a recreational search not necessarily credible search or research work.

Subject Directory

Infomine-
Sends out crawlers
Boolian friendly
Recognizes “and” and “or” searches
Use of the pipe symbol uses complete and exact phrases
Enter a # within a search  ie renaissance near4 history will find the word within that number of words
Uses:
Great for research papers and intensive research easily can narrow the search and get precise results
